SSI Headquarters People often ask why Scuba Schools International Headquarters is located next to the Rocky Mountains rather than an ocean. Well, originally, SSI was a California company. From 1970 to 1973, we were located in Long Beach, California, next to all the great west coast diving. In 1974, Bob Clark took over Scuba Schools International and had a decision to make. Bob had spent several years of his childhood on Catalina Island where he learned to dive for abalone and lobsters. From this experience he developed a love of diving and living near the ocean. However, at this point he and his family were living in Colorado and loved the mountains. In the end, he decided it was easier to move the company to Colorado than to move his family to California. The move to Colorado turned out to be a great idea. Since Colorado boasts of having more divers per capita than any other state, and many of Colorado's residents are athletic, outdoorsy people, Scuba Schools International has no trouble hiring enthusiastic, sport-oriented employees. And for those new employees that have never been diving, the Training Department at Scuba Schools International offers Open Water Diver courses each year through the local affiliate, High Plains Scuba. So, even though we're in the heart of ski country, we make sure that the Headquarters and SSI USA staff are immersed in a scuba atmosphere. Several staff members are active Instructors, and many dive locally and on vacations. We even have the distinction of having seven Platinum Pro5000 Divers as well as Platinum1000 Divers, Gold500 Divers and Century Divers on staff. From our Headquarters in Colorado, we produce the educational materials and develop the courses that are offered by SSI Authorized Dealers. We also oversee the organizational details of the SSI Regional Centers around the world and serve divers, instructors and dealers in the United States and the Caribbean as SSI USA. With a knowledgeable and dedicated staff of about 40 employees, Scuba Schools International shines when it comes to personalized service and attention to detail.
